6:50 pm - Family Down - Matthew Presidente

strumquill

An incredible performance by Matthew Presidente (vocals, piano), Kacie Wallace (vocals), and Hazen Rice (guitar) of Family Down: a tune about how expectations in gay relationships can be dashed if one is not too realistic about them (to very loosely paraphrase what Matty told me).

You can see them play every Tuesday at the Central Bistro Cafe on Denman at Comox from 8:30-11:00pm.

8:32 pm - Myron from UK at Davie Day: Homophobic or Humourous?

strumquill

Myron from UK is a fire and escape artist street performer. Show here he is cajoling with two men in the heart of the Davie Village - Vancouver's gay area in a family oriented festival. Do you think his jokes are cliche homophobic stereotypes or is he paying tribute to the neighbourhood. You decide with comments under the media at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR1vMxVKl3g

9:53 am - Volunteering for Vancouver Pride!
pridevols2009  Hey everyone!

I just wanted to let you all know that It's not too late to sign up to volunteer for Vancouver Pride 2009; we are still accepting volunteers for a few events, including the Pride Parade and Festival, August 2nd. I wanted to make sure the word gets out to everyone in the community, so that no one misses the chance to be a part of this.

Sign up sooner than later to get the shifts you want; last year we filled up fast and we anticipate the same to happen for this year. Just this week we implemented a new system where you sign up, get your very own login, and then from there you can sign up for the exact events, shifts, and positions you want... immediately! Absolutely no waiting to be scheduled. You can then view your shifts online any time, instead of waiting for an email.

You can either go to www.vancouverpride.ca and look for the volunteer page, or take this shortcut:

http://web.volunteer2.com/public/organization/listjobs.aspx?OrganizationGUID=c37d4207-7d2c-4b24-8d55-6c29226b561f&AppForm=1

Just click on "I would like to volunteer for this organization" and take it from there!

Remember, ANYONE can volunteer. You don't have to be GLBTQ, etc, etc. I get that question a lot  =)

3:53 am - Looking for friends in Vancouver, BC

dragon_trinket
My wife is Egyptian / Canadian, and I am an American working towards living here with my beautiful wife. As she has just moved from Egypt and I have just moved from the US we don`t know anybody up here. We would like to hopefully meet other lesbian couples that like to hang out watch movies, go for coffee, museums, occasionally out on the weekend clubbing or what not. Mostly random stuff though we do tend to be the bit of homebodies at this time. My wife is a writer who recently got her coming out story in Xtra West. I am a bit of an artist and I also like to write, while doing some work making icons. We are looking to meet some nice lesbian couples to have as friends. So let me know if you are looking for the same and we can get to know each other. I am looking forward to meeting some nice people. Thank you.

Being on the complaints line can be a soul-crushing experience. Especially when you're on the receiving end of a batch of narrow-minded religious fanatics.

So give your nearest Pepsi bottler a call (as per the American Family Association's boycott page at http://www.boycottpepsico.com/pepsidistributors.aspx) and give them some love for standing up to those nitwits.

(why, yes I'm on the AFA's mailing list. Why do you ask?)

4:06 pm - Be a Barricade Volunteer for Car-Free Vancouver (Commercial Drive)

thismakebelieve
The first annual Car-Free Vancouver Day, on Sunday June 15, 2008 ushered in the next phase in this bold experiment that had been gradually happening in Vancouver for many years. It took the car-free meme to the whole city, and represented the next level in our evolution toward healthy communities, authentic cultural celebrations, and car-free streets. On that day, FOUR communities presented their own Car-Free Festivals: Kitsilano, West End, Main Street, and Commercial Drive. Each Festival was envisioned and organized by the local core organizers, and each had a unique flavour.

This year we’re doing it all again, and adding even more communities to the list!

Barricade Volunteers, or Barricadistas as we have affectionately grown to call them, and the glue of this very event! These super hero volunteers stand at a barricade, keeping the cars at bay, helping passersby, and observing the fun at the festival!

Shifts are only 2 hours long, and there are 6 throughout the day.

Without these volunteers, the festival doesn\'t happen! Volunteers get access to our green room full of delicious food, prizes, and more!

If you are interested in doing one or more barricade shifts, please send the following information to
